THE MISSION
SACNAS stands for the national Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in STEM. The organization is geared toward empowering people of Latino(a/x) and Native American descent in the sciences; however, it also encourages college students, graduates, and professionals of ALL backgrounds to become involved in the organization as well as in their communities.
As such, The New York University SACNAS Chapter is devoted to further diversifying the next generation of STEM scholars through leadership, community outreach, mentorship, and educational advancement at all levels. In addition, we provide students a platform to network, collaborate, and serve their community in impactful ways.
As a Society and Chapter that promotes inclusivity and diversity, while condemning institutionalized racism, white supremacy, and state-sanctioned violence, we stand in solidarity with those protesting police violence as well as the Black Lives Matter movement. We share in the pain that has been caused by the untimely and unnecessary deaths of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, George Floyd, as well as the many others that have fallen victim to the systematic abuse inflicted on people of color. We believe that it is our responsibility to speak out against those that are motivated by hatred and bigotry, while supporting those who continuously combat racial injustice. We ask our members, community, and allies to join us in our promise to stand with and support Black Americans who have faced injustices at the hands of a broken system. As a part of this promise, we will continue to persevere in our efforts to support the Black community both inside and out of NYU, no matter how difficult the road is ahead.
